"This Band Needs a Blues" Blues - Jazz Arrangement

Originally written for the 2004 Region 18-5A All-Region Jazz Band II, this is about as straight ahead as it gets - 12 bar blues, medium Basie-style swing, key of Eb. Originally written to provide solo opportunities for all who wanted to play; we ended up with eight(!) soloists on the concert. There’s a fun sax soli that highlights the bari. Trumpet range is to written high C.

Radiant Morning - Tenor Sax Feature - Jazz Arrangement

A lush full ensemble introduction leads into a beautiful tenor sax feature ballad. The sax section takes over for the bridge before returning to the full ensemble for the last A section. A brief transition moves the tempo up to a medium swing for the tenor’s improvised solo (easy accessible changes) before returning to the original ballad tempo to restate the final A section of the melody. Two brief cadenzas lead to an ensemble coda that supports the soloist to the end of the chart. Ensemble trumpet range to a brief written high C.

Overture On An American Folk Tune - Band Arrangement
This incredible overture was written for the All County Honor Band in Mercer County, Pennsylvania and is based on the familiar folk song, "Erie Canal." The slow, powerful introduction is comprised of fragments of the famous melody. The tempo then suddenly increases, yielding a driving, staccato variation featuring trumpets and percussion. After giving way to a mysterious section played by flutes and low brass, the "Allegro" reappears in an exciting contrapuntal form. Douglas Akey's Overture on an American Folk Tune is destined to become a classic!
